Not much movement since the last update..we have not even started the Harvest yet do to the weather being 80º every day since arriving! How ever I’m going to paste Terry’s take on what the harvest is so please sit back,relax and enjoy.
Im a helper. I stand next to or near this huge contraption where they dump beets and it sends these beets to a huge pile creating a mountain of beets that eventually is yards and yards long and wide. The trucks come up, dump and go. Us helpers tell the truckers what to do (who has not wanted to do that a time or two??), push or shovel rogue beets off the ground and back into the hopper or pile, collect sample bags of beets, anything else the higher ups (pile operator, Forman, etc.) want. Lark does this too. The pile operator sits in a box at the end of the contraption and drives the arm across the pile so the beets pile up nice and pretty. The foreman walks around important like making sure everybody is safe and not getting injured from the contraption or a stupid truck driver.
BUT I get to wear my steel toed boots, a safety vest, goggles and a GREEN hard hat! WHOA!! Look out people! I’m feeling a special connection to the jolly green giant now!!
Ok ….once we start I will definitely get some picture of this little green sprout! LOL..we are told on a limited basis we will work on the 7th for a few hours, till the temperature gets to high.The forecast here is not suppose to cool down till mid next week.We are told the harvest will take 14 days give or take but I’m not sure since some areas have been pulling beets and taking them directly to the factory to process. All we know is that they are paying ALL harvest workers a “stay pay” of 4 hours each day we didn’t work but lets get this done we are ready to work or go home.
